A
Across the Grain
Also known as: XTG
Shaving approximately ninety degrees across the natural direction of beard growth.
Why it matters: It removes much of the stubble left after a with-the-grain pass while usually remaining gentler than shaving against the grain.
Aftershave Balm
Also known as: Post-shave balm
A soothing product applied after shaving to help calm and moisturize the skin.
Why it matters: A gentle balm can reduce dryness and support comfort after the skin has been rinsed and patted dry.
Against the Grain
Also known as: ATG
Shaving in the direction opposite to the natural growth of the beard.
Why it matters: It can produce the closest finish, but it also demands the best preparation and the lightest touch. It is optional and may not suit sensitive skin.
B
Backbone
Also known as: Brush backbone
The resistance felt when a shaving brush is pressed against the face.
Why it matters: Backbone affects how firmly a brush massages the beard and how easily it loads harder shaving soaps.
Badger Brush
Also known as: Badger-hair brush
A shaving brush made with badger hair, traditionally valued for water retention and a soft face feel.
Why it matters: Its ability to hold water can make it easy to build rich lather, although higher price does not automatically mean a better shave.
Beard Reduction
Also known as: Gradual beard reduction
The practice of shortening the beard progressively over successive passes instead of trying to remove it all at once.
Why it matters: Gradual reduction usually places less stress on the skin and is central to a comfortable traditional shave.
Bloom
Also known as: Brush bloom
The fuller, outward spread that develops in many natural-hair shaving brushes over time.

Boar Brush
Also known as: Boar-hair brush
A shaving brush made with boar bristles, known for firm backbone and a gradual break-in period.
Why it matters: Boar brushes are particularly effective at loading firm soaps and often become much softer with regular use.
Bowl Lathering
Also known as: Lathering bowl
Building shaving lather in a separate bowl or mug before applying it to the beard.
Why it matters: It makes it easy to watch the lather's gloss, density, and hydration while producing enough lather for several passes.
Break-In Period
Also known as: Brush break-in
The period during which a new natural-hair brush, especially boar, becomes softer and more comfortable through use.
Why it matters: Patience allows the bristle tips to split and soften while retaining useful firmness.
Bristles
Also known as: Brush fibres, Brush hairs
The individual fibres or hairs that form the working part of a shaving brush.
Why it matters: They hold water, collect soap, work lather, lift whiskers, and help distribute moisture through the beard.
Brush Loading
Also known as: Loading the brush
Swirling a damp shaving brush over the soap to collect enough product for the shave.
Why it matters: Insufficient loading can make rich lather difficult, while excessive loading wastes soap without necessarily improving the shave.

Cost Per Shave
The purchase price of a shaving product divided by the approximate number of shaves it provides.
Why it matters: It is often a more useful measure of value than the initial price because a quality soap can last for months.
Craftsmanship
An appreciation for tools and products designed to perform well and provide lasting service.
Why it matters: Traditional wet shaving often appeals to people who value dependable tools, thoughtful routines, and long-term quality.
Cushion
Also known as: Lather cushion
The protective body of lather that helps support the razor as it travels over the skin.
Why it matters: Good cushion contributes to comfort, but it works best together with slickness and proper hydration.

Dull Blade
Also known as: Blunt blade
A razor blade that has lost enough sharpness to tug or drag rather than cut cleanly.
Why it matters: A dull blade encourages extra pressure and friction, increasing the likelihood of irritation.

Exfoliation
The removal of loose dead skin cells from the surface of the skin.
Why it matters: A shaving brush can provide gentle exfoliation while lifting whiskers and distributing lather.

Face Lathering
Building lather directly on the damp beard with a loaded shaving brush.
Why it matters: It combines beard preparation and lather building, requires little equipment, and lets the shaver feel hydration changes as the lather develops.
Friction
Resistance created when the razor drags across inadequately protected skin.

The natural direction in which beard hair grows across different areas of the face and neck.
Why it matters: Growth direction often changes around the chin and neck, so understanding it reduces tugging and irritation.

Hard Water
Water containing higher levels of dissolved minerals.
Why it matters: Hard water can require slightly more soap or more effort to produce the same rich lather achieved with softer water.
Hydration
Also known as: Lather hydration
The amount and balance of water worked into shaving lather.
Why it matters: Proper hydration turns thick paste into glossy, slick lather. Too little water feels sticky; too much can make the lather thin and unstable.

Ingrown Hair
Also known as: Ingrown whisker
A hair that curls back into the skin instead of growing outward, often producing a tender bump.
Why it matters: Reducing pressure, respecting the grain, and avoiding unnecessarily aggressive passes may help reduce the conditions that encourage ingrown hairs.

Knot
Also known as: Brush knot
The bundle of bristles secured inside the shaving-brush handle.
Why it matters: Knot size affects precision, face coverage, soap use, and the amount of lather a brush can hold.

Lather
Also known as: Shaving lather
The creamy mixture created by working shaving soap, water, air, and usually a shaving brush together.
Why it matters: It softens whiskers, holds moisture, cushions the blade, and provides the slickness needed for comfortable razor glide.
Light Pressure
Also known as: Minimal pressure
Guiding the razor with little added force and allowing its weight and sharp blade to do the cutting.
Why it matters: Excess pressure removes more skin, increases friction, and is one of the most common causes of irritation.
Loft
Also known as: Brush loft
The length of the bristles extending above the shaving-brush handle.
Why it matters: A higher loft generally feels more flexible, while a shorter loft usually feels firmer and more controlled.

Nicks
Also known as: Small shaving cuts
Small cuts that occur when the blade catches raised skin, blemishes, or uneven pressure.
Why it matters: Good preparation, a controlled angle, short strokes, and light pressure reduce their likelihood.

Post-Shave Care
Also known as: Finish
The steps taken after shaving, such as rinsing with cool water, patting the face dry, and applying a gentle balm or moisturizer.
Why it matters: Proper post-shave care helps calm freshly shaved skin and supports comfort between shaves.
Preparation

Softening the beard and readying the skin before the razor touches the face, usually with warm water and good lather.

Proper Storage

Allowing shaving soap to dry naturally and keeping it away from excessive heat, sunlight, and humidity.

Razor Burn
A temporary burning, stinging, or tight sensation after shaving, usually caused by friction.
Why it matters: It often signals too much pressure, poor lather, repeated strokes, or an overly aggressive direction of shave.
Razor Glide
Also known as: Glide
The smooth movement of the razor over well-lubricated skin.
Why it matters: Good glide indicates that the lather is providing enough moisture and slickness to reduce drag.
Razor Irritation
Also known as: Shaving irritation
General redness or tenderness caused by excessive pressure, poor preparation, or repeated strokes over the same area.
Why it matters: Recognizing irritation as a technique or preparation problem helps the shaver correct the cause rather than simply blaming the razor.

Safety Razor
Also known as: DE Razor, Double-Edge Razor
A reusable razor that holds a replaceable blade behind a protective safety bar or comb, allowing the blade to cut with light pressure and a controlled shaving angle.
Why it matters: A safety razor gives the shaver direct control over angle, pressure and blade choice. Used with good preparation and lather, it supports the gradual beard-reduction approach taught throughout the Henry Cavendish Library.
Shaving Angle
Also known as: Blade angle, Razor angle
The angle at which the razor blade meets the skin during a shaving stroke.
Why it matters: A suitable, shallow angle allows the blade to cut cleanly without scraping or requiring extra pressure.
Shaving Brush
Also known as: Brush
A tool used to load shaving soap, incorporate water and air, build lather, lift whiskers, and apply lather to the beard.
Why it matters: The brush is central to lather quality and beard preparation, not merely a way to spread soap.
Shaving Puck
Also known as: Soap puck
A solid puck of shaving soap designed to be loaded with a damp shaving brush.
Why it matters: A puck uses only a small amount of product per shave and can provide months of use when loaded and stored properly.
Shaving Ritual

A consistent shaving routine that turns a chore into an enjoyable and deliberate part of the day.
Why it matters: The ritual is one reason many people remain committed to traditional wet shaving after first trying it for comfort or value.
Shaving Soap
Also known as: Traditional shaving soap
Soap formulated specifically to create a rich, slick, protective lather for shaving.
Why it matters: Unlike ordinary hand soap, it is designed to soften whiskers, lubricate the skin, and support comfortable blade movement.
Shower Shaving
Shaving during or immediately after a warm shower so the beard benefits from prolonged exposure to warm water.
Why it matters: It can maximize beard hydration and is especially useful for coarse whiskers, sensitive skin, head shaving, or a simplified routine.
Silvertip
Also known as: Silvertip badger
A commonly used name for a very soft grade of badger hair used in shaving brushes.
Why it matters: It is prized for luxurious face feel, although grading standards vary between manufacturers and price alone does not guarantee a better shave.
Single-Blade Razor
A razor that presents one cutting edge to the skin at a time, including many safety razors and straight razors.

Slickness
Also known as: Lubrication
The lubricating quality of lather that allows the razor to move smoothly with less friction.
Why it matters: Slickness is essential for comfortable razor glide and often improves as lather becomes properly hydrated.
Splay
Also known as: Brush splay
The outward spreading of shaving-brush bristles when the brush is pressed against the face.
Why it matters: Good splay helps the brush follow facial contours and distribute lather without collapsing or feeling floppy.
Straight Razor
A traditional razor with a long exposed blade that folds into its handle.
Why it matters: It is one form of single-blade razor used in traditional wet shaving and requires careful technique and maintenance.
Synthetic Brush
